What is a tech pack?
A tech pack, short for technical package, is the blueprint of a garment. It is the document a clothing factory uses to make your sample, calculate a price and run bulk production. Where a mood board shows how a product should feel, a tech pack explains exactly how it should be built: which fabric, which trims, which measurements, which stitches and how many pieces in each size and colour.
Why factories need one
Without a tech pack, a manufacturer has to guess. Guesses lead to slow quotes, several rounds of samples and products that do not match what you had in mind. With a clear tech pack, a factory can check if the product fits its machines and minimum order quantities, source the right materials and give you an accurate price from the first conversation. It also becomes your reference if something goes wrong in production, because both sides agreed on the same written specification.
What goes in a tech pack
A complete tech pack usually includes style information (brand, style name and number, season and garment type), front and back flat sketches, a fabric and trims list with composition, weight in g/m2, colour or Pantone references and suppliers, and a measurement chart listing every point of measure for each size. It also covers construction notes such as seam types and finishes, labels and packaging, the position and method of any branding or artwork, and the quantities you need per size and colour.
The template below covers all of these sections. If you are producing in Portugal or Turkey, our guides on writing a clothing production brief for Portugal and an apparel production brief for Turkey explain what local factories expect to see. When your tech pack is ready, you can compare verified clothing manufacturers in Portugal and clothing manufacturers in Turkey.
